No matter whether students love or hate them, uniforms are an important part of school curriculum these days. Unarguably, uniforms instil a sense of unity and pride in the minds of the student. It also helps mitigate differences among students based on their social and financial status.
Some countries such as the United States, Australia, and India allow the schools to choose their style and colour for their uniforms, while Vietnam and Bhutan insist on uniforms based on their traditional clothing styles.

Here’s a list of 7 different types of school uniforms around the world. Keep reading!

1>    Japan

Japan formally introduced school uniforms in the late 19th century. It’s known as “Seifuku” in Japanese and is similar in both, public and private schools. Boys usually wear white coloured shirts, ties and tailored trousers, while girls wear white blouses having sailor-style collar accompanied with pleated skirts. All schools make it mandatory for students to wear navy-blue socks and black shoes.

2>    Vietnam

The white áo dài is the traditional uniform for girls in Vietnam. Most public schools in Vietnam insist on the same type of uniform for both boys and girls. The shirt is usually white with the school logo stitched on the left sleeve. Navy blue or black coloured trousers are usually paired with these. A red coloured scarf is compulsory for students of grades 3 to 9.
Private schools, on the other hand, have trendy uniforms, with ties, vests, or blazers. Speaking of shoes, the students have the liberty to wear whatever they like, except flip-flops, slippers, and high-heels.

3>    Bhutan

In Bhutan, students usually wear their national dress. Boys wear a long robe (known as 'gho') tied with a belt. The robe is tied in a way forming a pocket in front. The pocket is big enough to keep books, notebooks and other school accessories. Girls wear colourful blouses. A large piece of rectangular cloth, known as a “kira”, is folded around these blouses. The Kira and Gho can be of cotton or woollen fabric, depending on the season.

4>    England

School uniform rules in Britain are quite stringent. Boys in primary school, wear polo shirts and shorts in summer replacing them with trousers in winter. Girls wear a polo shirt with skirts in summer and trousers in winter. In secondary schools, boys wear white shirts and black or grey trousers while girls wear white shirts with blue, maroon or grey trousers.

5>    India

Indian schools are very particular about school uniforms. For both public and private schools, uniforms are mandatory. Boys usually wear a light-coloured shirt with trousers (mostly blue, black or white), while girls wear a shirt and a skirt.

6>    Russia

Post 2013, school uniforms became mandatory in Russia. However, each school is free to decide its uniform. In most schools, both boys and girls wear white coloured shirts and black trousers or skirts.

7>    Australia

There is a great deal of similarity between uniform trends of Great Britain and Australia. The only difference lies in the colour of the uniforms. Boys wear button-up shirts with shorts in the summer, and trousers in winter, while girls' wear checkered or striped dresses. In public schools, both girls and boys usually wear polo shirts with dark trousers or skirt.
