Key Advantages & Disadvantages of School Uniforms

School uniforms are mandatory in a large number of schools around the world. Most of us used to wear school uniforms when we were school students, and remember buying uniforms from school uniforms shop after every few years. Ever given a thought to what are the merits and demerits of wearing school uniforms? Well, this post discusses a few key advantages and disadvantages of school uniforms.

ADVANTAGES:

1.       School Uniforms Destroy Class Barriers within Students

If students do not wear school uniforms, children with the least and most economic privilege can be easily spotted according to their clothing. When children put on school uniforms, the visible class markers within rich children and poor children are eliminated or minimized, leading to increased social mixing between kids from different economic backgrounds.

2.       School Uniforms can Boost Focus of Students

School uniforms increase the focus of students. It is believed that when children don’t have outfits to see, respond to, or comment on, they are able to invest greater mental energy on studying and learning. Uniforms facilitate disciplined learning at schools.

3.       School Uniforms Facilitate Safety

Areas in which students may be involved with gangs, school uniforms in such places can boost safety by preventing children from putting on outfits that declare gang affiliation, whether inadvertently or intentionally. School uniforms can heighten the safety of students inside as well as outside of school. They also increase the ability of students to blend in with others and concentrate on studying without needing to worry about becoming a target because of their clothing choices.

DISADVANTAGES:

           1.       School Uniforms can be Costly for Parents

Buying school uniforms for children may be costlier than purchasing regular clothes for guardians and parents. The number of school uniforms shop or suppliers from which school uniforms can be availed are often limited, and the prices are kept high by the lack of any competition. Moreover, school uniforms may also include expensive items like dress shoes and blazers that might be difficult to afford for some families.

2.       School Uniforms Restrict Self-Expression of Students

One of the arguments against school uniforms is that the self-expression of students is limited because of uniforms. Teenagers, especially, are well-known for wanting to express their tastes in art, fashion, and music, as well as their emotions through their clothing, piercings, and hair.

3.       Schools Uniforms might be Sexist

Some school uniforms may come across as sexist to students and parents. For instance, if a school uniform involves skirts for girls, and not pants, some students as well as parents may find this objectionable. This may result in conflict with the administration of the school. Not all girls like wearing skirts, and some girls may not like wearing traditionally “feminine” outfits.

These are some of the many merits and demerits of school uniforms. The debate on whether or not school uniforms are truly helpful for students continues. However, till now, wearing school uniforms is mandatory for students of a vast number of schools.
